As an environmental engineer you would be involved to some capacity in protecting the environment on a daily and constant basis. As an environmental engineer you would be working in situations that would have an impact on the air, the plants and even the animals and people around you. You would have the chance to make a difference in the environment in a way that activists simply cannot. Engineers are the thinkers and planners behind the changes we make for our well being everyday. Water and sewer treatment plants, these are designed by environmental engineers. Laws and regulations regarding hazardous materials, again the brain children of environmental engineers. They are think-tanks behind every major environmental change we see, and their jobs are as varied as they are.
The job descriptions for environmental engineers are as different and varying as the people that choose this field of work. Some may choose to work on a local scale, helping the local government to find solutions to problems such as waste management. Some may choose to work on a larger scale project such working for major corporations to ensure proper cares goes to ensure that hazardous waste materials are being disposed of properly.
The work done by these engineers also varies greatly. For one environmental engineer the day may include going to many different testing sites and gathering data, perhaps for a study on acid rain.
The next may be spending the day in a proposed construction site, taking samples to see what kind of organisms are living in the ground, but also spending time to seek out what kind of wild life is living in above ground, this might mean going through tracks, or even droppings, or just sitting around awhile. To him it is worth it to see what effects the proposed build is going to have on the environment.
Another option would be for an engineer to work with a parks department or similar agency in saving the lives of endangered species. They may be directly involved in the hands on rescuing of animals, or in the long term planning of how to perpetuate the species as a whole, or both.
An environmental engineer may be working with a team of health care professionals to help contain an outbreak of a very serious communicable disease in a third world country. As you can see these are very different descriptions that can all fall under the same category.
Environmental engineers have a very wide range of options to chose from. Most environmental engineers can make a very good living working as consultants for corporations. Environmental engineering laws can be complex and confusing and many corporations will pay consulting fees. This is especially true for the people who are willing to go on to pursue a specialization in environmental engineering law, for people willing to specialize like this they can make quite a bit on top of the traditional engineer salary.
Environmental engineering is not for everyone. Some personality that might be helpful to someone pursuing a career in engineering might be; a great love of the environment, attention to detail, the ability to work alone and without direct supervision, the critical thinking skills, analytical mindset, problem solving skills and many others. It also helps to have some reading and writing skills as much of the information you will be processing will be written information.
As with any engineering position this is one that will take plenty of schooling, however the outlook for these positions is great. As we continue to increase our environmental awareness and care about our impact on the world around us the positions like these are expected to grow. As with any engineering career entry-level jobs are going to require at least a minimum of a bachelor's degree. Of course higher levels of education are going to yield higher pay, and specialization is going to lead to more specialized positions. But with the bottom ten percentile of the environmental engineer salary still being around fifty thousand dollars a year, they really aren't doing too bad.
Ultimately this is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who truly wants to make a difference in the world around them. If you are a critical thinker who is passionate about the air you breathe, the water you drink and the grass our future generations will play in then you may want to consider a career in environmental engineering.
