Venipuncture Training

Venipuncture is a procedure conducted by the phlebotomist to extract the blood from a human body while focusing on the veins of the body. This involves the withdrawal of the blood from the veins rather than targeting the arteries and the capillaries for the same purpose. Thus in short, medical science refers to the process of collecting the venous blood for the purpose of screening, diagnoses and research etc. as the venipuncture.

This process is a critical one and requires the phlebotomist- the individual responsible for drawing blood from the body of the patient; to be alert and vigilant to the many variable factors pertaining to the condition of the patient, laboratorial requirements, precautions, safety measures, hygienic standards and much more. In order to start with the procedure, the phlebotomist may be required to read out or make aware the patient of the institute policy related to the venipuncture procedure.

After examination of the patient and going through the various mandatory reports, the phlebotomist will decide on the procedure of extracting the blood sample from the vein of the patient. The method of collecting the blood sample from the veins can either be via syringe or with the help of Vacutainer. At this point the phlebotomist will be required to affirm certain condition as specified by the doctor, which may range from fasting, to intake of certain pills and so on, prior to commencing with the procedure itself. These conditions and any other observations are noted down to assist the professionals in the later stages in identifying the factors, for which the blood was withdrawn from the body.

Other information pertaining to drugs and pills both before and after the completion of the procedure is also noted by the phlebotomist. One of the most critical tasks of the phlebotomist is to pacify their patients. There are always patients who seem to get apprehensive for no reason, along with those who are opting for venipuncture for the first time and even children at certain times. It is the responsibility of the phlebotomist to make them comfortable and pacify them prior to the procedure of venipuncture, so that it can be concluded safely, while minimizing the discomfort caused to the patients.

Prior to venipuncture; the phlebotomist has to take into consideration certain aspects like; whether the treatment will involve opting for more than one specimen to be collected from different veins and other number of issues. It is wise to inform the patient of the side effects of the procedure, which may range from weakness, shiver and tiredness to prepare them beforehand. This also helps in building trust of the patients.
