Environments vary with different areas of the country. Some areas are colder during the years, while others experience more rain. Other areas, such as the Northeast, have more extreme temperatures. In the case of civil engineering projects, the building, structure, or system needs to fit in and interact with the environment surround. Civil engineering concerns the design, maintenance, and construction of physical structures and the relation to the environment. Because of these diverse structures, the field is divided into specialties, which include environmental, geotechnical, water resources, coastal, and construction engineering. All involve considering the needs and requirements of the structure or system being built and also those of the natural world.
Someone who is a civil engineer will do various private and public sector projects. In all instances, the engineer will be involved in designing and planning grading, drainage, pavement, water supply, sewer service, electric and communication supply, and land divisions. He or she will be directly involved with the construction plans.
A Connecticut engineering company, for example, will do a combination of these projects at various points in the state. Certain needs will vary with locations, however. The northwestern portion, known as Litchfield County, is a mountainous and hilly area, and bridges and roads will need to be built differently than those along the shoreline. A civil engineering company, for example, may need to design a septic system in a city or a roadway or water management system for a suburban town; licensed professionals will be involved in planning for various commercial and residential buildings but also the land around them. Additionally, planning and zoning varies for each town, and an engineering company will also have a hand in this aspect for construction projects.
